Well, our winter get-togethers kicked off again back in October, with a few of us meeting to discuss where we're all at, and what the plan should be for this winter. Last year we inaugurated this new group, with the idea that, although we all share the experience of being an academic researcher, we are all working in some excitingly different fields! So each one of us gave a short presentation about our research - really just to get to know each other ;) We had some great variety - two visiting scholars from Aberdeen University/Colombia and Edinburgh/France - and a fab social in da Lounge at the end.
This year there's a slight change in format: invite folk with experience in various areas of interest to the group (deliberately vague ;), who will then join us for an informal chat, to share their experiences, give advice, point out what-not-to-dos, etc... Of course, we're also still continuing with the presentations of research-in-progress, that's what we're all about.
Last month, Dr Jonathon Wills gave us an insight on what it was like to do a Phd in 'the good old days' - and what he got out of it. Next month we're changing sides - we're getting an experienced Phd Supervisor to come along and give us his side of the story ...
Next meeting: 8 December 2010
When? 7.30pm
Where? John Goodlad Building, NAFC Marine Centre Scalloway
Guest: Martin Robertson (on 'What's it like to be on the other side? Your Phd Supervisor's perspective.')
